What is the 8th deadly sin of show participation?
The 8th Deadly Sin:  Don't enter a quilt in a traveling venue if you can't
keep your commitment to the curator(s).  We work extremely hard to get the venues for you, and in order to get them, we have to make commitments up front.  It is extremely embarrassing to say nothing of what it does to our feelings to not receive quilts that were promised to us.  And don't send a quilt you KNOW is supposed to travel for a year and then ask to have it back for another show. Either make two quilts or think about these issues up front. This is unkind to your curator, and makes a real hardship
.

Read the show entry form CAREFULLY and be sure you understand it before entering a piece.  This can be a reason why pieces get rejected. If there is ANY part of the entry form you don't understand, ask the curator about it BEFORE you have made your quilt and are expecting the curator to make an exception for you.  Again, it isn't fair to the curator, and it isn't fair to the rest of the participants either.

How do I make a proper sleeve for my quilt?
Unless an exhibit tells you otherwise be SURE that your piece has a sleeve that is a normal sleeve, 4" deep minimally to allow for the piece to be hung with whatever form of hanging the show does.
A sleeve is NOT tabs or special hanging devices.  It is a round tube of cloth that is finished to be 1" shorter than the width of your quilt on either side and sewn down 1" from the top and stitched along the top of the sleeve and on the bottom.Cut a piece of fabric the width of your quilt by 9 inches wide.Fold the 2 ends under and stitch to hem the raw edge. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and press.Baste a stitch along the folded side of the fabric ¼ inch wide.

Now sew a ¼ inch seam along the raw edges of the fabric.Begin the sewing about ½ inch in from the end and backstitch to the beginning of the seam. This will prevent the thread tails from hanging out the end of the sleeve.Open the sleeve up and match up the two seam lines, the basted one and the sewn onein the center of the sleeve and press.Lay this sleeve with the sewn seam down against the back of the quilt ½ inch from the top of the quilt edge and hand stitch in place. Once the sleeve is stitched all around Take out the basted stitches. You now have a proper 4 inch sleeve on your quilt.
