Standard Challenge Rules: 1. Entries must be entirely the work of the participant. 2. Innovative and original works only. No kits or quilts made in workshops. Work must be at least 2 layers of textiles and joined together by stitching. 3. Quilts must have been made within a year of the date of this challenge. 4. No work that has been exhibited in any national or international venue will be excepted. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please do ask Curator, Anne Copeland, 310-539-5087, anneappraiser@yahoo.com or Michelle Verbeeck, 717-292-1470, michelleverbeeck@gmail.com. 5. No pieces requiring special hanging, shipping, or storage needs will be accepted. Pieces lacking the required sleeve, proper label as specified, proper paperwork, or pieces that arrive with any problems such as being too fragile to ship, pieces with sharp objects, pieces that are not clean or have a strong odor, or pieces that are not able to be folded, will be returned to the maker. 6. If work is embellished, all embellishments must be securely and properly fastened to the quilt, or the quilt will be returned. 7. Fiberarts Connection of Southern California reserves the right to reject any quilt that is not as represented in the digital images. 8. All work must have a 4-inch wide hanging sleeve placed 1" down from the top of the quilt and 1" in from either end. The sleeve must be attached securely to the back. A proper sleeve is cut from a 9" width of fabric that is folded in half with outer sides on the inside, and sewn down along the open edge for the length of the sleeve. The sleeve is then turned right side out, pressed so the seam is in the center, and then stitched by hand (or whatever way you would normally stitch it) to the quilt. If your work arrives without the label and sleeve, it will be returned to you. 9. All works must have a complete label on the lower back right-hand corner that includes the following: name of quilt, size of quilt, artist’s name, phone number, address, website if you have one, and e-mail address. If labels are handwritten, they must be legible. If the label is fused on, it should also be stitched down so it will not fall off. 10. All accepted works will remain in the possession of Fiberarts Connection of Southern California for two (2) years from the date the works are received by FACSC. Please do not ask us to take your work out of our exhibit so that you can enter it in another event; we are absolutely unable to do that under any circumstances. Our catalog, the lists of the quilts for the venues, and other things are all made up at the time of your acceptance into the show and that means we would have to change everything. If you wish to enter another show, please make a separate piece. 11. No smaller than 24 inches on any side and no larger than 60 inches on any side. There will be no exceptions. 12. Signature on the entry form is a legally binding contract that signifies that your work, if selected, will be available for the two years specified for this exhibition and sale. Your work cannot be returned to you during our exhibition time. If your piece is sold at any of the venues, the buyer will have to wait until the venues are over to receive the quilt. 13. Payment for any sales will be made at the end of any exhibition. Fiberarts Connection will retain a 10% commission of each sale. This will be in addition to any commission charged by any gallery or museum. We endeavor to select galleries and museums that never charge more than 40% commission. 14. Up to two (2) works may be submitted for a nonrefundable $25 entry fee. Payment by Paypal is preferred. If you cannot pay by Paypal, a check or money order should be made out and mailed to: Anne Copeland, P.O. Box 1376, Lomita, Ca 90717, Phone 310-539-5087 (for questions). 15. Your entry fee must be submitted by the challenge deadline. There are no exceptions. If you are a physically challenged artist who might have difficulty paying the entry fee, you need to let Anne Copeland, Curator, know ahead of time so we can try to help you. You can get in touch with Anne at 310-539-5087 or anneappraiser@yahoo.com. 16. All Fiberarts Connection of Southern California challenges are juried. We accept digital images on a CD as a submission or by email to Michelle at fiberartsconn@gmail.com . We reserve the right to omit quilts that have been accepted for this exhibition if they do not have the same qualities as the submitted images. Images need to be mailed on CD to: Michelle Verbeeck, 1 Thunderbird Ave, Dover, PA 17315, 717-292-1470 17. We require an overall shot and a detail shot. Images are to be titled in the following manner 18. If you are not able to create a CD with your images on them, you may send your images to Michelle Verbeeck, fiberartsconn@gmail.com. You need to make the subject line in all capital letters: Last Name, First Name, Quilt Title, Black/White. Attach the two files you have named as shown above. 19. Include a copy of the entry form/artist statement with your CD or if you are submitting via e-mail, the entry form/artist statement must be attached. Michelle Verbeeck uses this information to produce the online exhibit catalog.
20, wit. Photographing: Quilts should be photographed on a solid color background, preferably a light to medium gray (if your piece is light overall) or beige piece (if your quilt is dark) of unwrinkled cotton will do. Please do not to use white fabric as a background behind your quilt for photographing, as it creates lots of glare and will pale down the fabrics too much. Take the best photo you can; poor quality images will hurt your chances of being selected. Photograph the quilt straight on, as an angled shot does not show the work well. Images should be cropped close to the work. Please send all images thru at 300 dpi. That means a high-resolution photo. We will edit them as we need to.
21. Do not send your quilts to be juried. You will be notified by email of your acceptance (or decline with an explanation as to why, since FACSC is about educating). 22. You will be notified by e-mail if your quilt is accepted and you will be told when to ship your quilt. 23.When you pack and ship your quilt, do not put gobs of plastic bags, plastic popcorn or other extra wrappings in the box. Place work in a large plastic bag (make sure to remove the air). Please use a new clean box that fits your quilt when it is folded, not an oversize box. Space for storing boxes is limited. If you must use a mailing tube, the triangular tubes are stronger than the round tubes; all tubes tend to break open. If your quilt cannot be folded at all, it may not be accepted for the show. We have to ship them as a group folded, and they are stored folded between shows. The folds come out of the quilts just fine when they are displayed. Please include a return label. 24. Make sure that your full name, address, and even your phone number are on the outside of the package as well as Anne Copeland's phone number on her address (given under the photography information) so that if it is lost in transit, it can get back home to you. 25.Do not send slats or additional hanging pieces; we will use these materials and we will not be responsible for returning these materials. 26.Please use the United States Postal Service if you live in the US. Boxes will be safely held at the post office until they are able to be picked up. This will mean no boxes get left outside in bad weather. All mail sent in the U.S. MUST be sent to Anne Copeland, P.O. Box 1376, Lomita, CA 90717, 310-539-5087, anneappraiser@yahoo.com. 27.If you live overseas then you can use the shipping company of your choice. Overseas participants please mail work directly to Anne Copeland, 2350 250th St, #14, Lomita Ca, 90717, 310-539-5087 28.All work must be accompanied by funds for return shipping. 29.Loss or Damage: The artist agrees to hold harmless and indemnify Fiberarts Connection of Southern California for all artwork that is lost due to theft or damage in any way. The Fiberarts Connection agrees to act in good faith to provide a secure environment for display of artwork. Acceptance of this agreement indicates that the artist has accepted these terms and agrees to participate in the show. 30.Insurance: Fiberarts Connection does not carry insurance for you. We will handle your work with the same standards any of us apply to our own work. As the artist remains the Title Holder to each of the exhibited artworks, insurance of the artworks shall remain the sole responsibility of the artist. This means that you pay insurance for the quilt when shipping to us and provide enough to insure the quilt on its journey home when you send return postage. 31.Appraisals: Anne Copeland can appraise your quilt for you for a fee if you need it for insurance purposes, an insurance value must be provided even if quilt is not for sale. Anne Copeland will inform you if the insurance value is unrealistic. 32.Pricing your work and commission: The selling price for your quilt on the entry form may not be changed once submitted. Your piece needs to include a 30% commission for galleries and a 10% commission for Fiberarts Connection. Fiberarts Connection retains the right to change the price if it deems the price is inappropriate. The artist will be notified if this is a necessary change. All pieces should be for sale as this is what is needed for gallery shows. If you have made the quilt for a member of the family or someone else, please just note "SOLD" on the price, but we still need an insurance value. Galleries don't mind if a piece is already sold. We will note: "Private collection" unless you want us to give the name of whom the quilt belongs to on the placard.
