Challenge Rules:
Deadline: October 30, 2009

1.         Entries must be entirely the work of the participant.

2.     Innovative and original works only. No kits or quilts made in workshops. Work must be at least 2 layers of textiles and joined together by stitching.

3.     Quilts must have been made within a year of the date of this challenge.

4.     No work that has been exhibited in any national or international venue will be accepted. If you have any questions regarding this issue, please do ask Co-Curators, Jeri Pollock, 847-949-0188, jeriptoo@yahoo.com or Anne Copeland, 310-539-5087, anneappraiser@yahoo.com.

5.     No pieces requiring special hanging, shipping, or storage needs will be accepted. Pieces lacking the required sleeve, proper label as specified, proper paperwork, or pieces that arrive with any problems such as being too fragile to ship, pieces with sharp objects, pieces that are not clean or have a strong odor, or pieces that are not able to be folded, will be returned to the maker.

6.     If work is embellished, all embellishments must be securely and properly fastened to the quilt, or the quilt will be returned.

7.     Although this challenge is not juried, the Co-Curators reserve the right to refuse any piece that is not as represented in photos, or is inappropriate for our exhibits. Such pieces would include, but not be limited to any with strong religious or political themes. As a nonprofit, we are not able to project such themes.

8.         If work is embellished, all embellishments must be securely and properly fastened to the quilt, or the quilt will be returned.

9.         If you use a photo of anything for your inspiration that is not your own photo, you will need to obtain permission to use it and you should so note in your statement the source of the photo, any name for it, and “with permission by ……….”. If the photo is your own, you can so state in your statement.

10.         Sleeve.  All work must have a 4-inch wide hanging sleeve placed 1" down from the top of the quilt and 1" in from either end. The sleeve must be attached securely to the back. A proper sleeve is cut the width of the finished piece and 8-1/2 - 9”wide (depending on whether you want to make your seam 1/4" or 1/2"). Press under ½”on each short end and then turn a second ½”to enclose the raw edges (when you are done, your sleeve should be 1" in from each edge of the quilt and 1" down from the top). Stitch securely to create a finished edge.

Stitch down the top of the sleeve where you have pinned it on the back of the quilt. You can add an ironed 1/2" pleat along the length of the sleeve before stitching down the bottom of the sleeve. This allows the quilt to hang flat at the top at a show where round rods are used.

11.         All works must have a complete label on the lower back right-hand corner that includes the following: name of quilt, size of quilt, artist’s name, phone number, address, website if you have one, and e-mail address. If labels are handwritten, they must be legible. If the label is fused on, it should also be stitched down so it will not fall off.

12.         Your signature on the entry form is a legally binding contract signifying that your work will remain in the possession of Fiberarts Connection of Southern California for two (2) years from the date the works are received by us, unless we have reason on our end to return the quilts sooner. While we generally only keep them for approx. one year for the traveling exhibit, we might have one or more that run into the next year, and we want to be able to give you the best chance to get more exposure from one entry fee.

Please do not ask us to take your work out of our exhibit so that you can enter it in another event. Our catalog, the lists of the quilts for the venues, and related items are all made up at the time of your acceptance into the show, which means we would have to change everything. If you wish to enter another show, please make a separate piece. If your piece should sell during the course of the travelling exhibit, we will make every attempt to have the buyer wait to receive it until after the last exhibit, and will put a sold sign on it wherever appropriate.

13.   Fiberarts Connection of Southern California takes every precaution to protect your quilts, but it is your responsibility to have an appraisal and to have insurance to cover your quilt while it is travelling.

Any financial or other assistance you receive so that you can enter our events stays confidential, so don’t be afraid to ask us if you need assistance. This is one of the things we do as a nonprofit. If we are unable to assist you ourselves, we will attempt to find some anonymous angels to help who will not know who you are.

14.         You may submit two (2) works for a nonrefundable $25 entry fee. Payment by Paypal is preferred. Send any Paypal payment to anneappraiser@yahoo.com.

If you cannot pay by Paypal, a check or money order should be made out and mailed to: Anne Copeland, P.O. Box 1376, Lomita, Ca 90717, 310-539-5087 (for questions).

15.         Your entry fee must be submitted by the challenge deadline. There are no exceptions. If you are a physically challenged artist who might have difficulty paying the entry fee, you need to let Anne Copeland, Curator, know ahead of time so we can try to help you.  You can get in touch with Anne at 310-539-5087 or anneappraiser@yahoo.com.

16.      We need your digital images on a CD or by e-mail sent to Anne Copeland at anneappraiser@yahoo.com when you send your entry fee. The images are used to make a catalog to help us get live venues ahead of time. We reserve the right to omit quilts that have been accepted for this exhibition if they do not have the same qualities as the submitted images. Images need to be mailed on CD to: Jeri Pollock, 700 Fontana Place, Mundelein, IL 60060, 847-949-0188.

17.          We require an overall shot and a detail shot. Images are to be titled in the following format: “lastname_firstname_title.jpg” for the full shot and “lastname_firstname_title_detail.jpg” for the detail shot. If you have any difficulties doing this, please write to Anne Copeland and she will find a way to help you.

18.          Include a copy of the entry form/artist statement/Short Bio with your CD or if you are submitting via e-mail, the entry form/artist statement must be attached.  We use this information to produce the online exhibit catalog, so make sure that everything is the way you want it and that it is spelled right.

19.          Fiberarts Connection of Southern California retains the right to use any of the images of the quilts for publicity purposes.

20.                  Photographing: Quilts should be photographed on a solid color background, preferably a light to medium gray (if your piece is light overall) or beige piece (if your quilt is dark) of unwrinkled cotton will do. Please do not to use white fabric as a background behind your quilt for photographing, as it creates lots of glare and will pale down the fabrics too much.
Take the best photo you can, photographing the quilt straight on, as an angled shot does not show the work well.

Images should be cropped close to the work, but be careful not to chop off part of the quilt. Please send all images at 300 dpi. That means a high-resolution photo. We will edit them as we need to.

21.          You will be told when to ship your quilt.

22.                  When you pack and ship your quilt, do not put gobs of plastic bags, plastic popcorn or other extra wrappings in the box.  They really don't do anything for the shipping and your quilts won't rattle like some items in their packages.

If you enclose additional items with your quilt - storage bags, foam noodles for rolling the quilts on - you need to have your name, contact information and return address on each item so that it will find its way home to you. Remember that we are storing these additional things for more than a year, and no one can remember what belongs to who without some reasonable form of identification.

Place work in a large plastic bag (make sure to remove the air).  Please use a new clean box that fits your quilt when it is folded, not an oversize box. Space for storing boxes is limited and some will simply be discarded if we determine they cannot be reused for the return shipping. If you must use a mailing tube, the triangular tubes seem to be stronger than the round tubes; all tubes tend to break open.  If your quilt cannot be folded at all, it may not be accepted for the show. We have to ship them as a group folded or rolled, and they are stored rolled between shows. The folds generally come out of the quilts just fine when they are displayed. Please include a return label.

23.          Make sure that your full name, address, and even your phone number are on the outside of the package as well as Anne Copeland's phone number on her address (given under the photography information) so that if it is lost in transit, it can get back home to you.

24.                  Do not send slats or additional hanging pieces; we will not use these materials and we will not be responsible for returning them. We have our own hanging materials for local shows, and those outside our state have their own as well.

25.                  Please use the United States Postal Service if you live in the US.  Boxes will be safely held at the post office until they can be picked up. This will mean no boxes get left outside in bad weather.  All mail sent in the U.S. MUST be sent to Anne Copeland, P.O. Box 1376, Lomita, CA 90717, 310-539-5087, anneappraiser@yahoo.com.

26.          If you live overseas, or if you live in a rural area where is no USPS pickup, you can use the shipping company of your choice. Overseas participants please mail work directly to Anne Copeland, 2350 250th St, #14, Lomita Ca, 90717, 310-539-5087.

27.                  All work must be accompanied by funds for return shipping unless other arrangements have been made with Fiberarts Connection of Southern California.

28.                  Loss or Damage: The artist agrees to hold harmless and indemnify Fiberarts Connection of Southern California for all artwork that is lost due to theft or damage in any way. The Fiberarts Connection agrees to act in good faith to provide a secure environment for display of artwork. Acceptance of this agreement indicates that the artist has accepted these terms and agrees to participate in the show.

29.                  Insurance: Fiberarts Connection does not carry insurance for you. We will handle your work with the same standards any of us apply to our own work. As the artist remains the Titleholder to each of the exhibited artworks, insurance of the artworks shall remain the sole responsibility of the artist. This means that you pay insurance for the quilt when shipping to us and provide enough to insure the quilt on its journey home when you send return postage. The major shows provide limited insurance, but it is generally not anything above $500 per quilt, so it means that you need to be responsible for your own piece insurance-wise. If you are depending on your household insurance to provide your coverage, please check with them to see their requirements for insuring a quilt if it is going outside your home to an exhibit or show.

30.                  Appraisals: Anne Copeland can appraise your quilt for you for a fee if you need it for insurance purposes, an insurance value must be provided even if quilt is not for sale.  Anne Copeland will inform you if the insurance value is unrealistic and will help you to set one that is accurate. There is no charge for establishing an insurance value. Only written appraisals have a fee.

31.                  Pricing your work and commission: The selling price for your quilt on the entry form may not be changed once submitted. Your piece needs to include minimally a 40% commission. We do not generally charge any administrative fee for helping you to try to sell your quilts; donations are purely your choice and are always welcome.

Payment for any sales will be made at the end of the exhibit. We always try to select good galleries and other venues that don’t charge more than 40% commission. However, there is no guarantee, so it is best to figure 50% for the gallery.

Fiberarts Connection retains the right to change the price if it deems the price is not in line with other art pieces in the exhibit. As a certified appraiser of numerous art quilts over many years by well-known and emerging artists, Anne Copeland is knowledgeable whether a price makes sense, and she also values the work of other artists and will tell you if the price is too low. The artist will be notified if this is a necessary change. All pieces should be for sale as this is what is needed to enable us to get good gallery shows. Remember that it is a privilege to exhibit in a gallery and this is their business. They need to make or at least have an opportunity to make money or it will not be worth it for them to continue to exhibit our work.

If you have made the quilt for a member of the family or there is some specific reason that you are unable to sell it, please just note "SOLD," or "Private Collection" on the price, but we still need an insurance value. Galleries don't mind if a piece is already sold.
