Kate DeWitt: Artists Statement and Resume: I was drawn very quickly from traditional quilting to art quilting because of the opportunities to communicate a message using this medium. I am particularly interested in projects that commemorate the seasons of life or meaningful life experiences and that reflects aspects of an individual’s persona or tells a story. I enjoy making pieces that are edgy, contain surprises, hidden messages and a lot of whimsy and humor. I have been working in two broad personal themes. The first theme addresses the evolving generational changes in my family. The second theme illustrates the challenges of coping with a number of chronic autoimmune diseases which I have faced during the last several years. I am challenged by the limitless options available to combine more traditional quilting techniques with a wide range of surface design and embellishment options. Examples of my work can also be seen on the site for Q&A QuiltArt- www.quiltartists.com, in addition to being on my site at www.katedewitt.fiberartsconnsocal.org.. |
